Seduced by the Sacred: Forging a Jewish Art

This show, which is curated by Richard McBee and Joel Silverstein, features artists who have been moved by the idea of the sacred in their work, including concepts of divinity and or the sublime.

The show runs from Oct. 3 to Nov. 22, 2010, at the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford, Conn., and the Joyce D. and Andrew J. Mandell JCC of West Hartford.
The Sabbath song Lechah Dodi, refers to the sacred marriage between God and the Jewish people. In this frankly erotic poem we welcome the Sabbath Bride. The curators use this poem as a model for Jewish artists, who give themselves over to an experience far greater than they. It follows the paradigm of works having to be made. It is the love and the sense of the forbidden that comprise the unique faith of the Jewish Artist.

"Designing the catalog for Seduced by the Sacred was a fun challenge. The works were so diverse and interesting, priority one became finding a way to give each work their chance to shine among 30 other pieces.I used a combination of Photoshop and InDesign, which Cynthia Beth Rubin coached me in whenever I got stuck on something unfamiliar. Cynthia and Yona Verwer were so helpful and always ready with advice, even when it came down to the wire in the hours before deadline."
